Instructor Implementation

Instructor-Driven Engagement

Teachers are critical to the success of technology in the classroom.

Courseware uses effective learning methods—such as learning by doing—but students need to engage with the courseware in order to get the benefits. Instructors choices in course policies and implementation practice can greatly influence how students choose to engage. Understanding how educators can support student engagement will continue to develop insights into implementation best practices. Our research has shown that:

  • Student engagement varies dramatically based on instructor implementation practices.

  • Course sections with higher engagement also score higher on final exam questions

  • Specific instructor choices—such as assigning completion points for practice and using a flipped-blended teaching model—have yielded higher engagement.

  • Instructors iterate their implementation practices over time to optimize student engagement in their learning context.
